Check out the picture below... In case you don't know much about Pilates, let me fill you in... It's going to seem a bit technical since I just pulled this from my manual... Pilates is named after its inventor, Joseph Pilates, who formulated the exercises in the 1920's. There are 34 original Pilates movements. As well as mat work, there are also equipment-based routines that encompass more than 500 exercises. Pilates is unique in that it will systematically exercise all the muscle groups in your body, the weak as well as the strong. It combines the focus of suppleness that you find in yoga with the emphasis on strength building found in the gym. It is total body conditioning that seeks to build flexibility, strength, endurance, and coordination without adding muscle bulk. It focuses primarily on the ‘Powerhouse,’ or deepest abdominal muscles, and works the rest of the body from this core connection. Through regular sessions on both the mat and specialized Pilates apparatus, clients seek to develop an equal balance between abdominal and lower back musculature to improve strength, stretch, stamina and stability. Over time, this approach creates a strong foundation from which one can achieve new heights of physical fitness and control, as well as emotional well-being and balance.
